We're a six person homeschooling family--complete with one 62 pound "puppy" and two grumpy part-Siamese cats-- on a cross-country pilgrimmage to a new brand new life (in the dead of winter). Come along for the ride! Is there a Starbucks near here?

Bakersfield to Vegas

We slept at the Bakersfield KOA again and set off for Las Vegas in the morning.

Wow!

What a gorgeous part of the country! We saw rolling foothills, which were amazing (no pics, sorry!), windmills, Joshua tree groves and even hit Route 66 in Barstow, CA. The true highlight had to be our visit to the ghost town of Calico, CA.

Rest Area in the Mohave Desert.

Windmills!

Calico was a boomtown of about 3000 silver miners in the late 1800's. Several of the original buildings still stand here and one of the residents, Lucy Lane, actually lived there until 1967. In the sixties, Walter Knott, of Knott's Berry Farm, purchased the remnants of the town as a preservation effort. It was turned over to San Bernadino County and now you can take self-guided tours, for a modest fee. Here's a more complete history. 6 stars for sure!

It was a long day of driving, which ended with our drive down Las Vegas Blvd ("The Strip"). The bright lights were exciting!

We spent two nights at the KOA Kampground at Circus, Circus on The Strip. We have so far enjoyed all of the KOA Kampgrounds we have stayed at. Clean shower and laundry facilities, as well as well-maintained and friendly.

Our first night in Vegas, we had dinner at the Pink Pony restaurant in Circus Circus ($9.99 Prime Rib Dinners!). Although we sat in the non-smoking section, my non-asthmatic kids developed asthma right before our eyes (oh brother....)

I put a nickel in a slot machine...no luck, though. Actually, I couldn't figure out the slot machines! I finally came to the conclusion that you must have to be wearing a funny hat or a tacky t-shirt to understand the finer points of slots.

How to clog your RV toilet

How to clog your RV toilet
  1. Use the RV toilet without first filling the bowl with water.
  2. Use non-RV toilet tissue
  3. Leave the hoses open instead of closed when you are at the campsite. (They need to be closed so that pressure is created when they are opened for dumping.)

Not that we'd know or anything....
